Week 1 - Introduction

My name is Avi Natha. I am twenty years old and was born on May 27th, 1994 in Sacramento, California. I am tall, skinny and I am of Indian and English descent. I have 3 other members in my family and one little ragdoll kitten named Onyx. In my free time I enjoy playing basketball at the huff, hanging out with friends, trying new foods, and relaxing at home. I enjoy eating all different types of foods and it is always one of things I look to do when visiting a new place. I moved to Oklahoma City with my family when I was three years old and have lived here ever since. I attended Mustang Public Schools almost my entire life and played tennis competitively all the way until college. I am now pursuing a pre-med degree in Biology as a junior at the University of Oklahoma. My main aspiration is to become a doctor. This has been my dream for a very long time. I hope to go to OU’s medical school in downtown and be able to continue my education here in Oklahoma. I love watching and playing sports like basketball, football, and tennis. I also am a fan of the Oklahoma City Thunder and Dallas Cowboys. Some of my favorite athletes include: Rafael Nadal, Lebron James, Dez Bryant, and Tony Romo. I currently am taking Microbiology, Physics 1, Physics 1 lab, and Health Facilities Management. This summer I went to Honduras on a medical brigade and also took a summer class at OU. At OU, I am the treasurer for the Oklahoma Undergraduate India Society and also a member of the Pre-med club. I plan to take the MCAT in April or the summer and start applying for medical school very soon.

  1. Hi Avi. It's nice to meet you. My name is Elizabeth. Do you have favorite restaurants in Norman or OKC? Trying different restaurants and types of food is one of the many fun things to do while traveling. That is amazing that you were able to go to Honduras and help. Good luck on the MCAT!

  2. Indian Epics: it's a small world, Avi! I just read Sehrish's introduction a little while ago (I am trying to finish all the Introductions on Friday so I can have a three-day weekend too!)... so I saw a picture of the famous Onyx. What a wonderful kitten... and of course by the end of the semester, Onyx will be more cat than kitten - it happens so fast! And there is such a big group of pre-med students in this class and in Myth-Folklore too... I am so glad that these classes can provide a creative outlet that is different from the really intense classes you are taking as you get ready for the MCAT and the even bigger adventure of medical school. Enjoy!!!

  3. First off, good luck with your MCAT! I know that’s a difficult one, and I’m sure you’ll do great. I’m very jealous that you went to Honduras. That was probably an amazing trip and wonderful experience. What all did you get to do there? I know you said a medical brigade? That’s interesting. Anyway, good luck this semester and with med school.

  4. Avi, it is so nice to meet you! I was actually born in California as well, in a small town called Irvine, right outside of Laguna Beach. My family moved to Texas when I was 4, so I don't remember much about it, but I always love going back to visit! I also think it is so cool that you went to Honduras this summer, I think traveling to other countries and experiencing other cultures, is the best learning experience you could ever had. I bet you had a great time! That is awesome that you are pre-med, I know your classes are extremely difficult! I am a pre-ot major, so I am about to take my GRE and apply to the program in OKC as well! Maybe I will see you there one day in the future :) Good luck with everything!

  5. Hey Avi, hope your labor day weekend went well! I would like to start of by saying your cats name is pretty awesome. you don't hear that name too often. Second of all, the Honduras trip sounds really cool and I'm sure quite rewarding. Being able to help the people in need in an impoverished country has to be a great experience. Best of luck with classes this semester and the upcoming MCAT!

  6. Avi, its sounds like you have a lot going for you and I'm sure you are quite busy. I actually took Facilities Management two semesters ago at OU. It's a great class and the teacher is wonderful, I'm sure you will really enjoy it. Even though I'm from Dallas, I am also a big fan of the Thunder. They are just such a fun team to watch and with how young they are they have a ton of potential. Nice getting to know a little bit about you.

  7. Hi Avi. I also played tennis. I am a senior and am also hoping to attend medical school at OU. I was a huge Rafael Nadal fan when I was growing up. The Cowboys lost pretty bad tonight, Romo had a rough night. Good luck studying for the MCAT and applying to medical school this year!

  8. Hi Avi, nice to meet you! I am a Biology major too! I took microbiology two summers ago and it's not so bad. Who is your professor? What kind of medicine do you want to practice or do you not have any ideas in mind yet? I have a lot of friends who are pre-med and they haven't decided what kind of medicine they want to go into yet! I think you will have a better idea after a few years of medical school! I have friends who went to Honduras. Thats very admirable. Great meeting you and have a wonderful semester!

  9. Hey Avi,

I noticed that you're pre-med and that's cool. I'm pre-optometry and the other person in our group for this week is also Pre-med. Your name is really interesting. I wish I played more basketball, although I feel like my time is stretched too much as it is. We actually have a ton of similar interests; my favorite teams are the Thunder and the Dallas Cowboys. Basketball is by far my favorite sport, and we're only a little over a month away from having the NBA back!

  10. Hey Avi! I am also a junior and Biology major. I actually just got done taking physics 2. I happened to take it over the summer at Oklahoma City Community College. I had a lot of fun and really enjoyed the class. I am planning to go to Honduras in the summer of 2015 on a medical brigade. Is there anything I need to keep in mind or anything specific I should take along with me?

  11. Nice to re-meet you Avi. I love Onyx and can't wait to see him grow up to be the fluffiest and most adorable Ragdoll. We have similar majors, classes, interests, and our aspirations are the same. I'm actually really excited to go abroad this summer. Whether it's Global Brigades or ISV, I know it'll be super rewarding and an unforgettable experience. Good luck with everything this semester and the rest of this year, you got this.

  12. Avi, You sound like you keep very busy! It is really great that your are involved on campus. That is also cool that you are so into sports! I am a Thunder fan as well. 13. Hello Avi!! It sounds like you really have a full schedule this semester, so good luck with everything! Especially the MCAT--but no doubt you've been preparing for quite a while. It sounds like you also had a busy summer, but that's awesome that you had the opportunity to travel with the Global Brigades! Also, I'm sure this course is very interesting for you seeing as you have some background in Indian mythology, so I cannot wait to read your interpretations of these stories! Again, good luck with everything!!

  14. Avi,
It sounds like you have it all figured out!
I love to travel and I am right there with you with the food. Food says a lot about a place!
I am from Fort Worth so I am also a Dallas Cowboys fan. I am actually going to the Dallas-Texans game this weekend! Very excited about that.
Good luck with the MCAT and med school!

  15. Hey, Avi! It’s great to meet you. I think it’s very neat that you have done the Global Medical Brigades trip- that’s always something I have wanted to do but haven’t had the time or money. I have taken some of the classes you are taking but I’m also in Microbiology. I think it’s neat you played tennis- I used to play as well – hopefully college isn’t keeping you too busy that you don’t have time for it anymore. Have a great rest of your semester and good luck on your MCAT!

  16. Hi Avi! I also played tennis competitively until college! I took a tennis class this semester, and it really made me miss it! I was also pre-med up until this semester, so unfortunately I had to take the MCAT before I changed my mind about medical school. I hope that you are able to find a good way to study for it! It is so weird that the changed the test, but I'm sure you will do great! Good luck on the MCAT and with the rest of your semester!

  17. Hi Avi! My name is Skyler, it’s great to meet you. I was also born in May. I love your name! I also love the name of your kitten – Onyx is so unique. I have a miniature golden doodle named Theodore. He is the man of the house. It’s nice to meet someone else who also enjoys trying new foods. I’m very picky, but I love exploring what I like and what I don’t like! I hope you achieve your dream of becoming a doctor – that would be so great to accomplish a lifelong dream. That’s also cool that you like the Dallas Cowboys. I’m a big Denver Broncos fan, but the Cowboys are my next favorite team (just because we live so close to them). GOOD LUCK taking the MCAT!! I just finished the LSAT, and boy can I tell you – it’s worth it to put in the time early! The feeling you have when it is finally over is really quite awesome. Where do you want to go to med school? I’m also glad that you love the Thunder. I’m very passionate about the franchise and what they mean to our city, ya know? Anyway, I’m looking forward to reading some of your writing!

  18. Hi Avi. Nice to meet you. I used went to school my freshman year at Saint Mary’s college in Moraga and I have a few friends who are from Sacramento. What high school did you go to? Maybe you know some of my friends! I have the same interests in free time as you. You know how to have a good time. You are a very good writer and I have enjoyed your stories throughout this semester. Keep up the great work!

  19. Hey Avi! This is the first time that I've had a chance to look at both yours and Alyssa's blogs. It's nice that even this far into the class, we can still be introduced to new people and see new blogs. It definitely keeps the class interesting. I also really like the thunder, and I think that it's cool that you were able to go on the medical brigades trip this summer. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors!

  20. Hi Avi. It's nice to make you e-quaintance. I think it's awesome that you want to be a doctor and are actively pursuing this goal. I too wanted to become a doctor growing up, and it was an all-consuming desire before I started college. Unfortunately, after about a year as a pre-med student, I realized that the workload and lifestyle of a doctor is not something that I wanted for the rest of my life. So, in a brilliant move, I changed my major to Letters. :P I hope that you are able to overcome the adversity that goes along with seeking out a medical degree. It's a difficult journey, but you can do it if it's what you really want. Best of luck!
